Team Work Makes the Dream Work
July 19, 2012–People are always surprised to learn that collaboration is so important to Finger Lakes wineries. “You mean, you’re helping out your competition?” they ask, wide-eyed. Well, yes. A rising tide lifts all boats, and a wine region sinks or swims based on the reputation of all its wineries.
In that spirit, Silver Thread has been sharing a booth at the New Amsterdam Market in Manhattan with three of our Seneca Lake neighbors– Red Newt, Anthony Road, and Fox Run. Shoppers to the market, located at the South Street Seaport, can sample and buy a variety of wines from each winery. As a group, our wines represent the major premium wine styles of the Finger Lakes–Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Lemberger. We take turns attending the market, so visitors can meet representatives from each winery over time.
New York City remains unconquered territory for Finger Lakes wines. There is growing demand for “local,” especially in the food category, but Big Apple residents remain relatively uneducated about the Finger Lakes. Our booth helps spread the word about our region and will hopefully encourage people who’ve tried the wines to ask for them in their neighborhood wine shop and restaurant.
Anthony Road owner John Martini has been trekking to New York City every week for nearly 20 years to sell his wine at Greenmarkets. We have no delusions about this one booth changing the wine landscape overnight, but little by little we will take on this major city and make them loyal to the great wines grown in their own back yard.
Stop by and check us out sometime– FLX Winestall at New Amsterdam Market–every Sunday from 11am-5pm.
