Wines of the Finger Lakes, Jan. 2019
*Silver Thread Riesling STV Estate Vineyard 2013–92 pts. The 2013 vintage reveals how this single vineyard Riesling evolves with more time in bottle. The nose on this wine is especially rich and vibrant, showing dried apricot, firne and minerals. The palate reveals an expressive and complex melange of dried and fresh fruit with tangy lemon-orange acidity. Superb length.
*Silver Thread Riesling STV Estate Vineyard 2017–91 pts. Redolent of minerals, flowers and dusty herbs, this single vineyard Riesling displays good palate depth and tangy citrus acidity. Somewhat reserved in its youth with notes of orchard fruit and orange flavors, it’s the weighty minerals that carry the day.
*Silver Thread Blackbird STV Estate Vineyard 2015–91 pts. Dark red. Toasty oak and pure dark red fruited nose. Soft on the attack with good depth of flavor, a hint of salinity and a lovely silky texture. Finishes with round tannins.
Silver Thread Dry Riesling 2016–90 pts. Beautifully aromatic wine showing yellow stone fruit with hints of lime and minerals. Ripe and full in the mouth with well integrated acidity, finishing long and flavorful.

Let’s try pairing some FLX wines with the turkey.
Riesling: Without question the queen of FLX wines. Riesling is also one of the most food-friendly wines around. Both dry and off-dry Rieslings play well with traditional oven roasted turkeys.
2017 Silver Thread Riesling, STV Estate Vineyard ($26): A classic FLX Riesling with citrus, stone fruit and a hint of ginger; nice clean mouthfeel with bright acidity; well-delineated and focused.

A New Benchmark, June 30, 2018
The warm, dry 2016 vintage raises the bar for the Finger Lakes
…As usual, Riesling dominates the best offerings as well as the overall number of wines reviewed, representing more than half the wines in this report and nearly all of those at 90-plus. Other leading releases can be found from..[several producers named]…and Silver Thread.
“2014 was a much cooler and less sunny year, so the wines have marked acidity,” says Silver Thread co-owner and winemaker Shannon Brock, comparing 2016 to previous years. “2015 was average, with late-season warmth leading to lower-than-normal acidity. The 2016s are more of a happy medium. The aromatic whites from 2016 have a lovely freshness paired with good flavor intensity.” The Silver Thread Riesling Seneca Lake STV Estate Vineyard 2016 (90, $26) is another textbook example from the Finger Lakes.
Furthermore, there is good value to be found among… other whites, [including] Silver Thread Gewürztraminer Finger Lakes STV Estate Vineyard 2016 (86, $18).
Wine Advocate, April 2018
Riesling “STV Estate Vineyard” 2016–91 pts.–It shows slate, minerals and cement…elegant…very fine.
Dry Riesling 2016–90 pts.–Dry, but by no means austere, this is fresh, concentrated and nicely built, with a clean finish and lively demeanor…balanced as well as impressive.
Semi-dry Riesling 2016–90 pts.–My tendency in the Finger Lakes is to prefer the Dry Rieslings, but this handles its sugar beautifully, while remaining fresh and lively. It shows good concentration and some tension on the finish. It’s a sure-fire crowd-pleaser, appealing to novices and geeks alike.
Dry Rose of Pinot Noir 2017–89 pts.–Concentrated and palate-coating, it finishes with dried raspberries. The acidity lifts the Pinot Noir beautifully and the finish lingers.

10 Finger Lakes wine pairings to try for spring, 5/11/17
Silver Thread Good Earth White 2015 ($14). This harmonious blend of Vidal blanc, Gewürztraminer and Riesling is deliciously vibrant. With just enough sweetness to match the acidity, you’ll get a nose full of flowers and a palate of fresh fruit. A great partner to foods such as goat cheeses, beet salads and leek soups, this wine can even take on asparagus and artichokes. It screams spring, and is perfect for a late afternoon quaff after a day of working in the garden.
Finger Lakes Passes Another Test in 2015, 2/28/17
Silver Thread…produced excellent Rieslings in 2015.
Quote from Shannon Brock of Silver Thread: “Our consensus on the 2015 Rieslings is that they are broad on the palate. There is a mouthfilling quality to them that runs through the dry, medium-dry and medium-sweet styles. We think this is due to the warm September weather that lowered acids and built ripe flavors.”
It’s clear that Finger Lakes producers can produce quality under myriad conditions. These wines merit the full attention of consumers who appreciate generally dry, freshly styled aromatic whites and more.
