Finger Lakes with a Flourish, December 2019
“Paul and Shannon Brock acquired Silver Thread in 2011. Almost a decade later, the wines here, especially the Rieslings, have truly hit their stride…The Rieslings here tend to ride the line between dry and off-dry, and the off-dry bottlings are often the standouts.”
92 points–2017 Riesling STV Estate Vineyard–“Very light and airy on the palate, with steely tension throughout, and a salty finish.”
92 points–2014 Dry Riesling–“…has evolved from zippy and well-made into something with fine balance and heft. Shows off the great potential of Silver Thread’s Dry Riesling.”
92 points–2013 Riesling STV Estate Vineyard–“Light but golden-tinged in color. Lots of candle wax and flowers on the nose.”
91 points–2017 Riesling Doyle Fournier Vineyard–“Fruity and full-bodied…opulent with ripe nectarine and apricot, and chalk and crushed shell on the finish.”
90 points–2016 Blackbird–“…lively and bright. Earthy and spicy on the nose, with a touch of licorice.”

Wines of the Finger Lakes, Jan. 2019
*Silver Thread Riesling STV Estate Vineyard 2013–92 pts. The 2013 vintage reveals how this single vineyard Riesling evolves with more time in bottle. The nose on this wine is especially rich and vibrant, showing dried apricot, firne and minerals. The palate reveals an expressive and complex melange of dried and fresh fruit with tangy lemon-orange acidity. Superb length.
*Silver Thread Riesling STV Estate Vineyard 2017–91 pts. Redolent of minerals, flowers and dusty herbs, this single vineyard Riesling displays good palate depth and tangy citrus acidity. Somewhat reserved in its youth with notes of orchard fruit and orange flavors, it’s the weighty minerals that carry the day.
*Silver Thread Blackbird STV Estate Vineyard 2015–91 pts. Dark red. Toasty oak and pure dark red fruited nose. Soft on the attack with good depth of flavor, a hint of salinity and a lovely silky texture. Finishes with round tannins.
Silver Thread Dry Riesling 2016–90 pts. Beautifully aromatic wine showing yellow stone fruit with hints of lime and minerals. Ripe and full in the mouth with well integrated acidity, finishing long and flavorful.

Thanksgiving Wines: A Last-Minute Checklist, Nov. 15, 2018
Dry Finger Lakes rieslings would be great additions. Look for labels like Ravines, Hermann J. Wiemer, Anthony Road, Forge Cellars, Red Newt, Heart & Hands, Silver Thread and Bloomer Creek. Each of their basic cuvées should sell for under $25.
Drink Local: FLX Wines with your Thanksgiving Turkey, Nov. 20, 2018
Let’s try pairing some FLX wines with the turkey.
Riesling: Without question the queen of FLX wines. Riesling is also one of the most food-friendly wines around. Both dry and off-dry Rieslings play well with traditional oven roasted turkeys.
2017 Silver Thread Riesling, STV Estate Vineyard ($26): A classic FLX Riesling with citrus, stone fruit and a hint of ginger; nice clean mouthfeel with bright acidity; well-delineated and focused.

A New Benchmark, June 30, 2018
The warm, dry 2016 vintage raises the bar for the Finger Lakes
…As usual, Riesling dominates the best offerings as well as the overall number of wines reviewed, representing more than half the wines in this report and nearly all of those at 90-plus. Other leading releases can be found from..[several producers named]…and Silver Thread.
“2014 was a much cooler and less sunny year, so the wines have marked acidity,” says Silver Thread co-owner and winemaker Shannon Brock, comparing 2016 to previous years. “2015 was average, with late-season warmth leading to lower-than-normal acidity. The 2016s are more of a happy medium. The aromatic whites from 2016 have a lovely freshness paired with good flavor intensity.” The Silver Thread Riesling Seneca Lake STV Estate Vineyard 2016 (90, $26) is another textbook example from the Finger Lakes.
Furthermore, there is good value to be found among… other whites, [including] Silver Thread Gewürztraminer Finger Lakes STV Estate Vineyard 2016 (86, $18).
Wine Advocate, April 2018
Riesling “STV Estate Vineyard” 2016–91 pts.–It shows slate, minerals and cement…elegant…very fine.
Dry Riesling 2016–90 pts.–Dry, but by no means austere, this is fresh, concentrated and nicely built, with a clean finish and lively demeanor…balanced as well as impressive.
Semi-dry Riesling 2016–90 pts.–My tendency in the Finger Lakes is to prefer the Dry Rieslings, but this handles its sugar beautifully, while remaining fresh and lively. It shows good concentration and some tension on the finish. It’s a sure-fire crowd-pleaser, appealing to novices and geeks alike.
Dry Rose of Pinot Noir 2017–89 pts.–Concentrated and palate-coating, it finishes with dried raspberries. The acidity lifts the Pinot Noir beautifully and the finish lingers.
